Paimpol, Cité des pêcheurs d'Islande

Paimpol, City of Icelandic Fishermen

A marina, fishing port and oyster farm, Paimpol is teeming with life whatever the time of year. On the Goëlo coast, in Côtes d'Armor, this port city recognized as being of heritage interest is located to the west of the Bay of Saint-Brieuc, the fifth largest bay in the world for the amplitude of its tides. Like many places in Brittany, fishing has long punctuated the lives of the inhabitants and shaped the architecture of the city. Anyone visiting Paimpol cannot therefore miss the history of fishing in Newfoundland and then in Iceland, when the Paimpol fishermen, often risking their lives, would spend months fishing for cod. The departure for the seas of Iceland was preceded by a pardon that still exists today. If this great history inspired the writer Pierre Loti in Pêcheurs d'Islande, it is also possible to learn more at the city's Museum of the Sea. Every two years in August, the Sea Shanty Festival is an international event that attracts thousands of spectators.

A must-see site in Paimpol, Beauport Abbey delights heritage lovers, nature lovers and live entertainment enthusiasts alike. The coastline of Paimpol, both natural and wild, offers visitors a preserved landscape that must be protected.
